A clear explenation of what is wrong in today’s music streaming economy. Without honest renumeration there are no artists. Without artists & creativity there is no music no matter what sort of ingenious algorithms you are using to service your subscribers. But with all the news about Spotify today, we come to understand that they don’t care about the a.m. problems. They are clearly in the game to make as much money as quickly as possible whatever the cost. Music is a vitally important part of a healthy society. Streaming is not the problem it’s the companies that organise it today that are. There are solutions. It’s time new contenders take the field and build a better and durable platform.

In the face of the endless choices that music streaming offers, is it possible that listeners are losing out on some of the perks offered by formerly popular listening mediums? Murmurs of a “post-streaming era” and thecontinued riseofinternet radioare just some of the signs that people may be interested in a reprieve from the self-selector experience. Independent curators (also called tastemakers or music content creators), who are non-affiliated and have some degree of online following, have emerged as streaming’s answer to keeping the personality in music discovery. Their knowledge and skill set — a notable aspect being their propensity for unearthing lesser-known music — has positive implications for listeners, platforms, and artists alike. Discover why these curators remain crucial to the streaming landscape at our latest How Music Charts article: https://lnkd.in/dEZHpnwYThanks so much Sonia Chien for these awesome insights!#musicindustry #musicindustrynews #musictech #musicbusiness #spotify #spotifyplaylist #independentartists

A group of collecting societies in the Nordics region, allied as Polaris Hub, have published their latest survey of music listeners in the region.4,000 people were canvassed across Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway. Among the findings: 95% of 12-65 year-olds across these countries use music-streaming services, and 55% pay for at least one of them.In terms of users, 67% are using YouTube and 62% Spotify – down three percentage points and up four percentage points respectively since Polaris’s 2022 survey.(Could Spotify overhaul YouTube in this most mature streaming region in the next couple of years? That said, YouTube Music is counted separately in the survey, with 11% of people using it.)Read The Full Story Here:https://lnkd.in/d9-AVjRt#MusicStreaming #musically #musicnews #readmore

In my #DCIMCapstone project, I plan to focus on how music streaming platforms have made an impact on the music industry and its stakeholders. Platforms like Spotify or Apple Music have made it convenient for listeners to have access to a vast catalog of music, podcasts, and other audio services.I have discovered that an app like Spotify plays a pivotal role in shaping the choices of a listener. There are calculated algorithms in Spotify's playlists that can boost an artist's outreach. This strategy of shaping the listener's music preferences allows for concentrations of power to dictate what songs are popular. This can ultimately cause an imbalance in the music industry as power players will often be prioritized while emerging artists have a harder time getting that same exposure. There are concerns as to how the power dynamics of the music-streaming industry complicate the operation of royalties and licensing. I think this article is a great read that dives into those concepts. 🎸🎧#musicindustry #musicstreaming #musicbusiness https://lnkd.in/efntM4-5

This is the best breakdown of independent playlist curation I've ever read.Through playlist curation, I've connected with more artists and industry insiders on Threads, Instagram, and TikTok than I ever could have imagined. Adding a small artist with less than 1,000 followers on Spotify to a small themed playlist has led me to some great conversations with indie pop-punk bands, hyperpop singers/producers, emo rappers, and so much more. So many of these artists see the value in building a loyal fan base, potential #SuperFans, one person at a time because they don't have the marketing budgets of larger artists, or they don't have the industry connections, or they just don't know what else to do to get their music discovered. Almost any artist can start a conversation with the person who added them to a playlist because we tag them on social media. Well, at least I do. If I genuinely like a song, I'll add it with intention of supporting growth. I might not be able to get Drake or Taylor Swift to DM me their next single before it drops, and I might not have as many listeners as some curators, yet, but I do find myself becoming a Super Fan when a band with 250 listeners on Spotify DM's me their next single asking what I think about it. Music discovery, and the problems musicians and fans face when 120,000 new songs are uploaded each day, is a fascinating thing to study.#musicindustry #musicbusiness #musicdiscovery #playlists

Spotify has announced that $4.5bn was paid out to indies last year accounting for 50% of the previously announced $9bn total. It's the first time that independent music has accounted for 50% of Spotify payouts.Spotify, says it has (its words) "levelled the playing field" by enabling independent artists to "access the same global audience and tools as the superstars".It's true - Spotify and the other streaming platforms offer the DIY and independent music maker access to the same platform as the majors and that is generally a good thing. It remains a bit of a rigged game though, and most of those independents will be in some way indebted to major distribution channels. However, in my musical heyday there was nothing like it. We didn't even call ourselves independent musicians, really we were just in a band. No way to release or distribute, not really any way at all to reach an audience other than by playing and praying! So while it ain't perfect, you do have the chance to use streaming platforms to build an audience of any size and with fans right around the globe.Never in my wildest dreams! Now, if we can just get our hands on a wee bit of that $4.5bn 😮#independentmusic#independentartists#musicproducer#audioengineer#recordingengineer

Spotify has been helping to drive the growth of music streaming around the world for nearly 20 years. This has resulted in billions of dollars of “net new” royalties to be paid to songwriters, artists, and other music rights holders who own public performance and/or mechanical rights to songs. Now, via a new “strategic partnership” between Spotify and Universal Music Group and Universal Music Publishing Group, Spotify will begin hosting music videos for Universal artists, which will begin to drive growth in royalties derived from synchronization rights to the corresponding owners of these music rights. See article from Music Business Worldwide (MBW) for more details. #investing #musicroyalties #musicbusiness #musicisvaluable https://lnkd.in/gC5JcxNC

While I resonate with the author's call for reimagining streaming platforms, I hold a different perspective on their impact. Contrary to the assertion that streaming services are diluting the music experience, I believe they have sparked an evolution in how we consume and engage with music. Streaming platforms offer unparalleled accessibility, exposing listeners to a vast array of artists and genres with just a few clicks. Rather than cheapening music, they have democratized access, empowering independent musicians to reach global audiences. Moreover, streaming algorithms, while criticized for hom*ogenizing content, also facilitate discovery, introducing listeners to new sounds based on their preferences. The resurgence of vinyl records may indeed signal a desire for a more tactile and curated listening experience, but it coexists harmoniously with digital streaming, offering diversity in how we engage with music. By embracing the benefits of both digital and analog formats, we can foster a dynamic and inclusive music ecosystem that honors tradition while embracing innovation.
