Did you know there were female valet services? I did not, but I certainly received an education today during my fast-paced, exciting, and whirlwind interview today with Gillian Harris.Gillian started out in the radio business as a reporter, then spent years as a popular, well-known DJ in the LA area, and then, found herself out of a job. She was hired to run a female valet service. After her first ride, she was hooked. For the last 21 years she has been running her own, highly successful company called "Valley of the Dolls." It was named "Best Valet of LA," has served every White House, and has created a sisterhood of female valets.Gillian is moving on from the business and is looking for an entrepreneurial woman to seize the opportunity to take over her company. To get a feel for your new adventure, please watch the interview. You can reach out to Gillian at her website: Valetofthedolls.com Or email her at park@valetofthedolls.com.Thank you, Gillian, for the difference you make for women and for what you are doing for the planet. BIO:Despite the presence of over 100 valet companies in the city, women face significant barriers to entry in this field. While men with no experience can easily secure valet positions, women are consistently turned away. Valet Of The Dolls is the sole exception, offering women a fair shot in a male-dominated industry. Since its founding in 2003, Valet Of The Dolls has built a sterling reputation, becoming the preferred valet service for the entertainment industry and even the White House. In an era where women's rights and empowerment are under threat, current owner, Gillian Harris, has dedicated 21 years to leading the company with a vision of maintaining this legacy. She is committed to finding a successor who will uphold the company's mission of empowering women. She says, "14.7% of all valet attendants are women, while 85.3% are men." Let’s ensure that the legacy of female valets continues to thrive in Los Angeles. Zimkita vs. Black Patriarchy vs. Corporate Career – Part III.3“Zim, Proverbs 31, is not exclusive to Black Patriarchy. All women, believe in this principle”.That’s correct, it’s pervasive across ALL RACES. In 2021, I'd a speaking event. During my speech, I referenced the work of Nancy Fraser (an American Philosopher and Professor). Her work links what she calls social reproductive work (housework, child rearing, elderly care, emotional care) to the paid / waged labor markets. You can Google her work. This was my pedestrian analysis of it:For the world systems to thrive, it's critical that both parts function optimally. So, whether humans are working in the home or are paid outside, all labor is INDISPENSABLE / NECESSARY to thriving economies and societies. The SYSTEM, though, had a dilemma. Most humans gravitate towards financial goals. Money has a high potential of giving tangible power. We can’t have everyone wanting power now, can we? Who will do the equally CRICTICAL unpaid labor? The solution was simple - MISEDUCATE girls to strive for unpaid labor. Teach them early on that they're naturally nurturing, have a woman’s touch, mothers love, and therefore it's honorable for them to measure their worth in unpaid labor. Boys, on the other hand, don't naturally possess these attributes. They’re automatically suited to economic activities as Providers. In the past, laws were written to exclude many women from paid labor markets.Fast forward to today – blatant laws of exclusion have been deemed immoral / unethical, but the miseducation of girls was never put into law, it remains mostly intact.Hence this scam of greatest proportions continues, even when women are working outside the home.Stories abound of women, left destitute in middle age. They never thought to measure their labor in financial terms. How many women have been scammed, by the very same people they “supported”, hiding assets they helped to accumulate?Post-divorce, I’ve taken 3 career breaks to parent. So, I’m not against the notion of us, women naturally making huge sacrifices. However, I’ve the privilege / freedom of choice. I’ve the privilege to succeed and thrive in paid labor markets. I advocate for this, especially for women CAs. We, teach you to be business savvy. About the importance of having the right legal agreements in place. To be well informed when concluding contracts. When you leave your job to work in the home, apply the principles. You know how much you might earn in 10 years’ time. Present value the amount, unwind that discount, and put the amount you’ll be getting in 10 years as a minimum in writing. Marriage contracts aren’t a one-day wedding thing. Like all contracts, there's a need for written amendments, when new terms are negotiated. This, however needs self-love and courage. Why did I stay? Why does the laboring required of black women under Black Patriarchy require special attention from Corporate Leaders?#ethicalleadership

Colorado consistently ranks high for the number of women holding elected office, currently second in the nation for women in the state legislature. Despite this, experts note significant barriers remain, particularly for women of color who are underrepresented. Challenges such as lack of resources, institutional racism, and sexism dissuade many women from running or succeeding in higher offices like governor or U.S. Senator. Colorado's history of strong female representation is due to active recruitment and support networks. Yet, systemic obstacles persist, requiring ongoing efforts to truly level the political playing field for all women to level the political playing field for all women truly. Here's what former Denver mayoral candidate and executive director of Women Uprising Lisa Calderon said about how the Me Too movement has impacted the culture in the Capital: "Speaking out isn't enough. It definitely takes courage, but we also have to support women when they do, including when they are facing the loss of their position, loss of their jobs, loss of their reputation, and their income. And it seems to be even more profound when women of color speak out around these issues."Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eM48P-Mt

We discussed the importance of Allies on our recent NET-WORK session, and Women's Affordable Housing Network (WAHN) is fortunate to have so many WAHNderful examples of how Allies can empower, elevate and encourage women in our industry. James Cromartie was the epitome of an active ally, and to honor him and celebrate others who exemplify the way James lived his life, WAHN created the James Cromartie Active Ally Award. Kent Neumann was honored last year with our award, and nominations are officially open for this year's award! Male ally nominees must show a demonstrated commitment to making the workplace more equitable, dedication to ongoing learning, and courageous action (e.g. calling out bias, creating space for women, and recognizing their own privilege). We acknowledge that an Ally can be of the same sex, race, religious belief, etc. but we have reserved this award for our male allies.Nominations open today, will close on Oct 13th, and the award will beannounced in late October. To nominate an Ally, please fill out this form as an individual or on behalf of a WAHN chapter. https://lnkd.in/g4d_eyxb

What a read! Thanks for sharing 💎Kim Regis!Concepts and frameworks that apply and explain lived experiences are like oxygen to nearly lifeless, “barely making it” individuals that struggle to breathe as they navigate these workplace dynamics.

If you like to use your Fridays for a little inspiration and reflection time, this article on the acknowledgment of the "Rosies" who joined the workforce during WWII will appeal to you. My takeaways:👷♀️ When we are in the work, we often don't recognize or celebrate the great things we are doing👩🚒 80 years later, we are still trying to get gender equity around pay👩🚀 Women are champs at getting the work done and not seeking out the acknowledgment that is often dueTake a moment now and celebrate something you've accomplished this week, this year or this career. Share it in the comments. I'll start!(thank you Michael Chae for sharing this article that made my day)

We love that women are contributing to the important role of a government affairs professional. In fact, nearly 67% of our Diversity & Inclusion in Government Relations survey respondents identified as women. Their presence in the workplace highlights the progress that has been made, and their perspectives shared with us emphasize the work that still needs to be done.
