In the realm of high-performance sedans, few vehicles have achieved the iconic status of the BMW M5. The first-generation M5, known as the E28, introduced in 1984, is a seminal model that set the benchmark for the high-performance saloon. As BMW’s first venture into combining sports car performance with everyday practicality, the E28 M5 represents both innovation and legacy.
*The E28 M5 was the fastest production sedan in the world when it was launched.
* Total 2241 E28 M5s were produced, making it the rarest of all M series.
* 1371 of those were with a lower compression engine without headers and catalytic systems made for US market with significantly less horsepower and only available in black
* Only 540 European cars with the powerful M88/3 engine were produced, making the European models the most collectable and rarest, however most have high mileage and rust problems as these cars were reliable and regularly driven, in wet climate.
* BMW produced an ultra rare batch of highly sought-after variant of the E28 M5, with only ten units produced as lightweight performance models. These exclusive versions were distinguished by their Polaris Silver paint, an M-Technic aero kit that included front and rear spoilers, and side skirts that enhanced aerodynamics and gave the car a more dynamic appearance. To further emphasize performance and weight reduction, these special E28 M5s omitted several features found in the standard model. Notably, they had a sunroof delete and manual Recaro seats—features that were done to reduce the car’s weight and enhance its driving dynamics. The focus was solely on performance, making these variants a pure expression of BMW’s racing heritage. This is one of those models.
